Community Environmental Renewal Scheme

The Community Environmental Renewal Scheme (CERS) is distributing grants of £5,000-£50,000.
Forward Scotland is administering this scheme for 2003-04 on behalf of the Scottish Executive, using funds from the Aggregates Levy.

The scheme aims to support a wide range of community based projects that address the environmental effects of aggregate extraction such as visual impacts, noise, dust, transport and loss of habitat. To be eligible, the community must be within five miles of a working quarry or two miles of a disused one or be able to show that they suffer directly from the extraction of rock, gravel or sand.

Possible projects might include - providing or upgrading footpaths or nature trails; studies into ways to reduce the impact of heavy transport; regenerating disused quarries for the benefit of the local economy; finding long term solutions to problems of pollution or fly tipping; or improving the landscape for recreation or nature.
Four priority themes have been identified: landscape and community recreation For further information or to discuss your project with a member of the (CERS) team, please call

Lottery Fair Share The Community Fund and the New Opportunities Fund

have recently developed the Fair Share initiative, which gives targeted support to areas which have not received their "Fair Share" of Lottery funds. North Lanarkshire as a whole has been designated a Fair Share area, and, within this, specific communities will be provided with priority staff development support to assist eligible groups to build proposals and complete funding applications.
Areas targeted for this enhanced support include Carfin, Newarthill, Holytown and New Stevenson. For more information on Lottery Fair Share and how this can help your group, contact Alison at CAVOC.
